Civil War Military Mass --- February 17, 2008

On Sunday, February 17th, at the 12:00 noon Mass at Our Lady of the Valley Church, 510 Valley St. in Orange, Fr. Dave Moreno, SDB, Chaplain of the 7th Regiment New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Civil War reenactors, will celebrate a Civil War Military Mass. Fr. Dave will be joined by dozens of reenactors from various living history organizations who will participate in the Mass in their Civil War uniforms. The Mass will focus on the contribution of Irish immigrants in the Civil War, including the role of the famed “Irish Brigade.” Our Lady of the Valley is an appropriate setting for this Mass as a look at the stained-glass windows reveals that most of them were donated by Irish parishioners who were among the founders of the parish in the late 1800’s. The Civil War Military Mass will include Latin chant, Civil War-era Mass vestments and hymns, and will be followed by a three-volley military salute and the playing of “Taps” to honor all who fell during the Civil War. Light refreshments, courtesy of the OLV Health & Wellness Ministry, will follow in the cafeteria of Marylawn of the Oranges Academy in South Orange, one mile south of Our Lady of the Valley Church. For more information about the Mass contact Fr. Dave at 973-674-2400 or ChaplainDM@aol.com
